We offer two months of protected time for those doing research under the mentorship of a faculty member during the PGY-2/3 year, where the only required clinical duties are 1 day/week of continuity clinic. The two months may be consecutive or separate. Many great mentors are accessible at UC San Diego; the faculty members place a high value on mentorship. Research projects have been diverse, including topics in epidemiology, clinical studies, basic science research, quality improvement, and medical education.
Many projects have gone on to be presented at national meetings and resulted in peer-reviewed publications. Residents presenting at conferences can be reimbursed up to $750 in fees and travel expenses and have up to three days of protected coverage for conference presentations during the course of their training. Furthermore, all those doing research present at our annual resident research symposium.

Resident Research Symposium
Projects from the research rotation are placed on the residency website and presented in the spring to a group of faculty judges for a chance to win one of four slots to be presented during the Medicine Grand Rounds series. For a second year, this event has been moved to a virtual format given the global health environment. Please check out all of our amazing residents and their virtual presentations here: Annual Resident Research Symposium. You can also see the e-poster presentations of the 2021 winners below.
