Ultrasound Curriculum

This is dedicated as an educational space for both point-of-care & general ultrasonography for the internist. If you have any feedback or ideas regarding the material and resources found here, please reach out to the ultrasound chief! For 2020-2021, this is Chief Nick! Welcome!

Our Longitudinal Curriculum

This chart displays the different topics covered in our longitudinal ultrasound curriculum each year. Each year, our intern class will get ultrasound sessions in procedures, cardiac POCUS, and pulmonary POCUS. During your time as a senior resident in PGY2 & 3 years (and PGY4 for Med/Peds!), you will get teaching in the topics listed in the green row during academic years starting with even years (2020, 2022, 2024, etc…) and the topics listed in the light red row during academic years starting with odd years (2021, 2023, 2025, etc…).

Each session is also repeated at a subsequent Friday school (typically 4 weeks afterwards) in order to catch all residents who missed the session the first time. Our sessions are done in our state-of-the-art Simulation Center at the UCSD Medical School, which is only about a 2 minute walk from our VA Medical Center!!

Forget Pathfinders, become a Viewfinder

Once you feel comfortable with the concept of ultrasonography, it’s time to grab a machine & a probe. But where do place our enthusiastically-wielded probe? Well, that depends on the question we want to answer!

Let’s break it down by organ system, into the 5 mentioned in the Basics talk! Each of the systems below will link you to a specific page where you can learn where to start and what you’ll see!

Now that we know the physiology, let’s check out the PATHOLOGY!
